Want Tasty Vegetarian Variety? Try Arabiata!

I don’t know about you, dear readers, but one of my favorite things to do growing up was eat out.  Since we’ve become vegan, we avoid eating out for various reasons, but when we find an establishment that has a variety of vegan dishes or is willing to tailor menu items to fit our needs, we become loyal customers.  That’s why we want to tell you all about Arabiata.

Arabiata is a local Egyptian chain of restaurants that serves up traditional Egyptian favorites.  Historically, they became famous for their fava beans (slow-cooked or medames and fried in the form of tameyia [or felafel].  Gradually they added a slew of other dishes, including a lot of vegetarian options.  VERY reasonably priced, you can get your fill for just a few Egyptian pounds!  Here are a few shots of the vegetarian items on the menu (*not all of the items are vegan).

And now – for the best part, here’s what we ordered:

Arabiata Salad Bar with Egyptian pickles (Mary's favorite!)

Foul Iskandarani (Fava Beans, Alexandrian style - with tahina and parsley - and other fixin's)

Alexandrian Style Tamaya (Felafel - with hot chilis)

Regular, small tameya (felafel) - I can not resist these!

I told you I can't resist them!

Foul (fava beans) with tomato sauce and garlic!!!

You can order delivery from Arabiata by calling: 16919, as you see below, or….

You can visit any of their branches all over greater Cairo including those listed below:

As a main dish, you can choose from a variety of mana’eesh: zaater (thyme), zaater with vegetables, or, as in the image featured below, spinach!

You can find Dar Al Amar Express in Roxy and Nasr City.  There is also a Dar Al Amar (not express! – the menu is different, but still has vegan options) in the Oasis on the road to the airport.  And, like many other things in Cairo, you can order from home!

Give Dar Al Amar Express a try and let us know what you think!

Got the urge to eat out? Try Peking.

If you’re vegan or trying out a plant-based diet, it’s sometimes pretty difficult to find a restaurant that offers tasty menu items.  In fact, it may feel impossible.  But, one of things we want to do at Alf Hana is help you find places in Cairo that offer delicious vegan food.

We thought we’d start by introducing you to the Chinese restaurant, Peking.  Peking has many items on their menu that are vegan.  The following pictures (sorry for the poor resolution) represent just a few of them!  If you have had another delicious dish from Peking, please add a comment and let us know about it! **The captions are the names of the dishes as my memory serves me, but it could be that their names are slightly different.

Shantong Salad (Deep fried zucchini)

Deep fried mushrooms

Foreground: Chinese Salad (cucumber and cabbage with noodles)

Cabbage Chili (this one is pretty spicy)

Vegetarian Spring Rolls

Barbecue Vegetables

Fried Rice with Vegetables

Tofu and Broccoli

Peking has branches all over Egypt including Heliopolis, Nasr City, Downtown, Maadi, a boat on the Nile, Sharm el Sheikh….

Let us know what plant-based dish you tried at Peking and if you liked it.
